breathe deep, don't sleep
I just printed my notes for tomorrow, as a means of distracting myself from the task of writing up 2000 words due tomorrow. I'm doing a write-up on exercise misconceptions, and my chosen topic is stretching and the misconception that it actually helps prevent injury in exercise. See, how did the lecture notes get printed? In procrastination theory, in order for something to get done, it takes a greater stimulus to provide motivation to get something that is actually of a lesser stimulus done. Granted, you have factors like task difficulty that play an important role, especially when contrasted with other less important tasks like printing lecture notes.
You know what? Actually, blogging at this juncture is pretty low on the stimuli list as well, which is why I'm here. Hurray.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh........back to the order of things.

there's HOPE yet
I'm so proud of my team, flying the asian flag... HAHAH.. or rather the southeast asian flag, with the exception of tony from china. And so i've been playing most saturdays in UQSport's indoor soccer tournament. It's an 8-team league, so 7 matches in total, and we've been through 5 matches already. Initially we lost the first match 4-3 because we were still new to the whole concept of how Australian indoor soccer works and having to learn to manage a big furry oversized tennis ball that somehow passes off as a soccer ball.
After that first painful defeat, we've had back-to-back victories over other teams, some challenging, some not so.

Yep, surprisingly the top team is an aussie one and not an asian one, but we're heading into a top-of-the-table clash with 'em this coming saturday and we'll need all the support we can get (yes even you back home, start cheering!). We took some battering this week against a bottom team; one of them was extremely physical and on the whole, they were technically not as superior and slower to the ball, hence the many many many fouls committed on us. They managed to injure our solid keeper Jonathan, and Joel who replaced him and really isn't a keeper, conceded one shortly after, failing to react better and handling the ball past the line after a quickly taken corner by The Gents (yes that's our opponent's team name, believe it). The first-half ended 1-1 and we were wondering what went wrong against the bottom team. We were doing everything right, except planting the ball in the back of the net. Our shots were waywardly off target, and the match kept getting interrupted with the incessant fouls against us. We are chasing the top team right now and we needed a good goal difference from this game to catch up with the big boys at the top. Thank God we picked things up in the second-half and managed to pull off an eventual 7-1 victory. In the process, their very violent player got red-carded -TWICE- and faces a permanent ban from the competition after charging into us and kicking our legs one time too many (i personally flew into the court divider, which is movable so that's good). Their frustration over the game really showed and in the end they weren't playing football anymore.
Some of us stayed back to catch Spartans in action against Leetness (the top dog) and both teams looked strong physically and technically. We have not played either team yet. It will be a very tight final two matches. Their reputation aside (judging from the league table), they really didn't appear as impressive as their record suggests. We stand a good chance if we keep things tight and continue working for each other. One thing's for sure. Our team pressures a whole lot more than other teams. Spartans and Leetness were giving each other plenty of time and space to work with and come up with stuff. Hope would never do that. We regularly charge players and force them into either trying to dribble the ball past or plain whacking it away. I could see regular lapses in concentration in defense as well as players pushing too far up , which probably explains why we have the best defensive record, because we try not to allow that. Indoor soccer will punish you very quickly if you are caught out of position attacking. I hope to keep more clean sheets and hopefully Jonathan will be back in action after twisting his knee, recurring an old injury.
HOPE lineup: Alvin (captain), Edwin, Christopher, Tony, Hak Wei, Joel, Jason, CK, Ivan, Jonathan (GK).

HELP ME GOD, HELP
In more ways than one.... here I am sitting in the library, and a certain someone is happily munching on my chips la. We came to study together (because I simply do zilch at home) and I packed some goodies into my bag because they keep me sane. Unabashedly, he asked me for my chips when I hadn't brought it out yet. That's fine, I'm all for sharing. So then I hand it to him, and he takes some from the bag. Hehe. THEN, to the tune of my raised eyebrow, he props it up on the wall next to him and happily MUNCHES and munches to the maximum can. Like wow hellllo etiquette? "May I have some of your chips please?" - absent. "Thank you" - absent. Actually sharing some of my chips with me - absent. Being positively asian, I show and say nothing. Mehh. Dear God, pleaaassseee help me deal with this!
To his credit, he just stopped munching and tied up the bag and placed it on the chair next to me. Which is very weird, because it now makes me feel so guilty that I felt that way towards him in the first place, like he was going to finish up the whole bag of chips for me. Mehhhhh.

i cooked today! headed back after class and decided to use the potatoes that were actually budding (-_-) and make potato soup. I also had a huge box of rice in the fridge and after some *ehemmm* research on youtube, i decided to try and fry authentic fried rice (w/o the huge fire unfortunately) as best i could. here's the results.
potatoes, carrots, onion, pork ribs marinated randomly with soy sauce and sugar
the long road to success

The Year 2000
There was this Englishman who worked in the London office of a multinational corporation based in the United States. He drove home one evening in his Japanese car. His wife who worked in a firm which imported German kitchen equipment, was already at home. Her small Italian car was often quicker through the traffic. After a meal which included New Zealand lamb, Californian carrots, Mexican honey, French cheese and Spanish wine, they settled down to watch a program on their television set, which had been made in Finland. The program was a retrospective celebration of the war to recapture the Falkland Islands. As they watched it they felt warmly patriotic, and very proud to be British.

intrigued
tonight, i attended a dialogue on interpreting the qu'ran and bible. it was my first time and definitely very very interesting. eve and i were like a half hour late so we did miss a substantial bit of sharing from sam green, representing the australian fellowship of evangelical students, but i was drawn in quickly into the sharing going on. many points were raised, but it was obvious that halim rane, speaker for the muslim side, is a scholar and academic through and through. he could not provide any answer for the theological issues raised, and there were some questions about abrogation that really begged more questions than answers when he gave replies. Allah can refute any previous commands He gave because He is God and is constantly giving contextualised instructions for modern living. And these fluctuations are pretty extreme, from speaking of peace to everyone around to ordering the killing of "infidels". Some verses can abrogate other verses -AFTER- them, which means a future verse is nullified even before you get to it.
it was clear that halim makes an excellent politician and academic but when it comes to the authenticity and conviction he has in his belief, there was none of that evident. paraphrasing, he mentioned that "i don't give a damn what other people think or belief in, as long as i belief in islam, am a muslim and practise the 5 pillars of islam. if they choose to belief in islam, good on them, if not, then so be it." what i got was that as long as he was accountable to himself, and was "working" his way into heaven by obeying the 5 pillars of islam, that was all that mattered. oh well, much more but i scribble on eve's notepad which evidently is not in my possession now, bleh.
sam for his part was really "helpful" by being extremely abstract when explaining the trinity, and i was lost there as well. don't thin that helped any of our muslim counterparts understand truly that the creator of us is a relational one who reaches out and communicates His love and longing to know us.
i leave you with a taste of Explore-UQ-Night on saturday!!
eve blasting one into the top corner
eve looking like a drunka... oh OOPS did i just say that?
it was pitch black when i clicked. and yet, sarah, well and truly, is ever ready. noobs eve and melanie were caught out cold, with eve offering a very feeble attempt.
wedding picture style! edwin and sarah, oh the scandalous pair.
